Saving on electricity

Small appliances

Use small appliances like toasters, slow cookers ,electric pots etc. as they use less electricity than a stove.

Boil water in the kettle rather than in a pot on the stove.

Only boil the amount of water that you require at that moment otherwise the left-over water will just get cold.

A pressure cooker conserve more heat than an ordinary pot.

Automatic washing machine

A front-end loading machine costs less to operate

Make use of maximum loading that your machine can accommodate.

Avoid pre-washes as far as possible.

If neccessary use cold-wash option. 30 degrees temperature is adequate for all washes.

Tumble dryers

If you are fortunate to have lots of sunlight, this is still the best option for drying clothes and will make your washing smell fresh and crispy.

First wring out most of the water before placing it in tumbler.

Use correct temperature settings.

Regularly check if clothes are not dry as people tend to “over-do” it with a tumble dryer.

Irons

Use thermostatically-controlled iron for corrct temperature switch-off.

Use distilled water in iron.

Iron low-temperature clothes first to give the iron some time to heat up, ie. make maximum use of available heat.

Insulation

It is estimated that 40 % heat is lost through uninsulated eiling and doors.

Heaters, geysers and stoves

Everyone knows that these are the biggest consumers of electricity and  consume 40% of your total electricity. So keep these two appliances in check daily. You can cut as much as a whopping 25% electricity by just lowering the geyser temperature and swithing off when leaving for more than 3 days.

A water-conserving shower head will also help a long way—do you really need to shower under a waterfall everyday?

Do not unneccessarily open and close the oven door every time you need to check inside.the oven.

Switch the temp on high until the is  boiling and switch back to a lower temp to just simmer the food.

Buy heaters with temp control.

Invest in a hot water bottle or electric blanket rather than a heater switched-on all night.

Only heat rooms occupied and close doors leading to the rest.
